VA Disability Rating for Cartilage, semilunar, removal of, symptomatic (DC 5259)

This diagnostic code covers situations where you've had cartilage removed from your knee (the semilunar cartilage is also called the meniscus - the C-shaped cartilage that cushions your knee joint) and you're still having symptoms afterward. The VA rates this condition at a flat 10% disability rating, regardless of which knee is affected or how severe your ongoing symptoms are. This 10% rating recognizes that even after successful cartilage removal surgery, veterans often continue to experience pain, stiffness, or other knee problems.

Rating levels

  • 10% — You qualify for this rating if you've had semilunar cartilage (the C-shaped cartilage cushions in your knee joint) surgically removed and you're still experiencing symptoms from that surgery. The symptoms could include ongoing pain, stiffness, swelling, or other knee problems that affect your daily activities. Simply having the cartilage removed isn't enough - you must have continuing symptoms that impact your function.
