VA Disability Rating for Thyroiditis (DC 7906)

Thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland, which can be caused by autoimmune conditions, infections, or other factors. Under diagnostic code 7906, the VA only gives a 0% rating when your thyroid function is normal (euthyroid means your thyroid hormone levels are in the normal range). If your thyroiditis causes abnormal thyroid function - either overactive or underactive - the VA will rate you under different diagnostic codes with higher percentages.

Rating levels

  • 0% — You receive a 0% (non-compensable) rating for thyroiditis when your thyroid function is normal (euthyroid). The condition is recognized but is not currently producing compensable symptoms.
  • -1% — If thyroiditis presents as overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease), it is rated under DC 7900. If it presents as underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), it is rated under DC 7903.
