VA Disability Rating for Maxilla, loss of more than half (DC 9914)

This rating covers the loss of more than half of your maxilla (upper jawbone). The VA rates this condition at either 50% or 100% depending on whether the missing bone can be replaced with a prosthetic device. If doctors can fit you with a prosthesis that works, you'll get 50%. If the damage is too severe for any prosthetic to help, you'll receive 100%.

Rating levels

  • 100% — You've lost more than half of your upper jaw bone (maxilla), and the damage is so severe that doctors cannot fit you with an artificial replacement like dentures or other dental prosthetics. The bone loss or structural damage makes it impossible to create a prosthetic device that would properly attach or function in your mouth.
  • 50% — You have lost more than half of your maxilla (upper jaw bone that holds your upper teeth and forms part of your cheek and eye socket area), but the missing bone and teeth can be replaced with an artificial device like dentures or an implant. The loss is significant enough to affect eating, speaking, or facial appearance, but modern dental prosthetics can restore most of the function and appearance.
